Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid

Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid

MSRP: $67,700

Estimated MPG: 20 city / 24 highway

Class: Full-size SUV

The Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid rides on a completely redesigned Cayenne platform that improves upon what was an already capable large sport-utility vehicle.  Longer and wider than the vehicle it is replacing, the new Cayenne is also lighter, which helps the S Hybrid when it comes to both fuel economy and acceleration.

The Cayenne S Hybrid is fitted with a supercharged, 3.0 liter V6 engine that is matched with a single battery-powered electric motor.  Together, the hybrid system generates 380 horsepower and 427 lb-ft of torque – just 20 horsepower less than the gasoline-only Cayenne S and significantly more twist than is found in that model’s standard V8 engine.  Other features of the S Hybrid’s drivetrain include an eight-speed automatic transmission, an automatic engine start / stop feature as well as the ability to shut the motor down while the vehicle is coasting.

Capable of reaching 60 miles per hour from a standing start in 6.1 seconds, the Cayenne S Hybrid returns fuel mileage of 21 miles per gallon in city driving and 25 miles per gallon on the highway.  These efficiency figures are quite high for a large, all-wheel drive SUV.  The Cayenne S Hybrid comes with electric power steering and driving dynamics which largely match what performance vehicle fans have come to expect from the German brand.

The Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid also enjoys a generous dose of luxury equipment to go with its eco-conscious performance.  Leather seats are standard, as is a sunroof, Bluetooth integration and automatic climate control.  Options that can be installed on the S Hybrid include a number of safety systems (blind spot monitoring, a rearview camera, adaptive cruise control) as well as comfort items such as ventilated seats and four discrete zones of automatic climate control.  A DVD entertainment system is also offered for rear passengers.
