Mercedes-Benz ML450

Mercedes-Benz ML450

MSRP: $55,790

Estimated MPG: 21 city / 24 highway

Class: Full-size SUV

The Mercedes-Benz ML450 Hybrid SUV represents one of the first efforts from the German car company to compete in the gasoline / electric market.  The ML450 manages to provide all of the luxury accoutrements that fans of the Teutonic brand have come to expect while also delivering fuel economy that is worlds better than any of the standard editions of the ML.

Unlike some of the other premium hybrid contenders the Mercedes-Benz ML450 Hybrid SUV does not emphasize performance over efficiency.  Its two electric motors are controlled in such a manner as to work in harmony with a 3.5 liter V6 engine, together producing 335 horsepower and 381 lb-ft of torque.  While this is not an inconsequential amount of power, the vehicle’s gas mileage is far more impressive.  The EPA has rated the ML450 at 21 miles per gallon in city driving and 24 miles per gallon during highway cruising, which tops even the diesel variant of the ML around town.  Furthermore, the full-size truck can drive at speeds of up to 34 miles per hour on battery power alone, which when used in conjunction with the ML450’s automatic engine start / stop system further enhances fuel economy on shorter trips.

In addition to its environmental conscience, the ML450 also offers Mercedes-Benz’s 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.  While not intended to function as an off-road warrior, in combination with the SUV’s electronic stability program the vehicle is almost unstoppable in any inclement weather conditions – even deep snow or driving rain.  The ML450 also features an advanced eight-speed automatic transmission that offers a driving experience unlike any other hybrid SUV available.  Finally, the sport-utility vehicle has been given a maximum tow rating of 5,000 lbs, adding an extra dimension of practicality to its overall package.

Interestingly, Mercedes-Benz made the 2010 edition of this vehicle available only through a lease, with no option to purchase it outright.  The company claims that this decision is the result of a limited battery supply.
