GMC Sierra Hybrid

Estimated MPG: 21 city / 22 highway

Class: Full-size pickup truck

The GMC Sierra Hybrid is the twin of the Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid in almost every meaningful mechanical way.  Each features an identical two-mode gasoline / electric drivetrain, and each comes exclusively in a four-door design.  However, there are some differences between the two trucks that help them to each serve their individual markets better.

The most obvious changes have to do with exterior styling.  GMC has always strayed towards the more conservative side of the spectrum when it comes to body work, and the Sierra Hybrid is quite a handsome truck that is bereft of any flashy or out of place components.  In terms of options and features, the Sierra also tends towards a somewhat higher standard than its Chevrolet sibling, coming with 18-inch wheels, dual climate controls, cruise control, Bluetooth integration and a tow-ready electrical system.  Like the Chevrolet, it can be upgraded with navigation, a sunroof and even leather seats.

As with all current members of the GM hybrid truck family, the Sierra’s powertrain consists of two electric motors and a 6.0 liter V8 engine that are good for a total of 379 horsepower (47 of that contributed by the battery-powered motors).  The vehicle’s “electronically variable” automatic transmission is meant to imitate a four-speed unit, enabling the vehicle to tow 6,100 lbs – not bad for the needs of the vast majority of pickup truck buyers.  The vehicle’s fuel mileage, rated at 21 miles per gallon in the city and 22 miles per gallon on the highway, is a huge improvement over most other full-size trucks, especially when it comes to the dismal numbers typically seen when creeping along at the speed of rush hour traffic.

The Sierra Hybrid’s fantastic mileage around town makes it a very appealing vehicle for companies who are frequently called upon to operate in an urban environment where constant idling and stop-and-go driving are unavoidable.  Drivers may, however, be perturbed by the somewhat balky feel that the vehicle exhibits when the pedal is pressed hard from a stop as the electric motor disengages in order to let the mightier gasoline engine take over.
